1st Grade!
This week in first grade we will be working on creating compound words. We are following an iStation lesson in which students must identify the compound word and be able to break it apart. Later in the week we will play a game much like "Go Fish" with student each having a hand of words (fly, ball, cake, base, pan, etc) and must match these words in order to create compound words. Out last lesson will use these words that students created to form sentences using compound words. Students will then illustrate the individual words along with the compound word that they form.

Last week we followed an iStation lesson about making predictions based on known story elements. We will also be focusing on creating summaries of our readings.
In past weeks we have:
reviewed adjectives. As part of this weeks lesson, student picked a noun (tornado) and wrote adjectives that described the noun (windy, dark, loud...) all around it on their own posters.
-studied biographies and autobiographies. At the end of the week, we wrote our own autobiography using the components we learned about this week.
-practiced finding metaphors in poetry and determining their meanings
-worked in our groups to read and discuss our books. We focused especially on main ideas vs. details.
-studied homophones. We will be comparing sentences and using context clues to decide which word should be used.
-tested for questioning while reading. We learned that asking questions while reading allows us to connect to the text as well as understand and remember what we've read. This is a skill that we will continue working on throughout the year.
-reviewed parts of speech using them in sentences. We are especially focusing on pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs. We will be creating group mascots and writing our own legends using parts of speech in our writing!
